This website contains a selection of books and printed matter designed by Filippo Nostri, a book designer who has been running his own studio since 2009. Alongside his studio practice, he founded in 2019 Sete edizioni together artist and teacher Anna Biagetti.
“What is a book? A question that could lead to different answers, depending upon whether we consider its outward appearance or – more importantly – its content, more precisely we might ask about a book’s body or its soul. Starting at the lower level – its materials – a book is sheets of paper of a given size bound together. Lines and dots of colour made from ink of a precise chemical composition are printed onto the paper, and so on. However, by continuing in this direction – that is, analyzing the external appearance of the book and the nature of its materials – we will never know its higher essence, which is what in fact determines the concept of the book and its possibilities for expressing and fixing human thought. The connection between meaning on the one hand and paper and ink on the other cannot be explained, but it is there, irrefutably so, or it would not be a book. The upper and lower layers are so intimately linked that when the lower level is destroyed, the upper would also be annihilated.”
